(RightWing.org) – House Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan (R-OH) has been working hard to get to the bottom of the US immigration issues. His recent efforts included interviews with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials as well as attempts to secure information on at least 14 criminals who may have illegally entered the country. Secretary of the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Alejandro Mayorkas failed to provide documentation on these individuals, so Jordan issued a subpoena to force his hand.
Outstanding Requests
The House of Representatives Judiciary Committee issued a press release in December, detailing its allegations. It states that members have been pressing Mayorkas for at least 14 A-files — detailed records of aliens who’ve entered the United States and haven’t been naturalized — since May 2023. The requested documents are for individuals who’ve been arrested for brutal assault, murder, theft, and alleged acts of terrorism. So far, the committee has received a total of two partial files along with acknowledgment that Mayorkas’ response has been limited.
The Judiciary Committee wrote to the DHS on November 13, 2023, once again asking for the outstanding A-files and giving Mayorkas until November 27 to produce them. He still has yet to do so. Members also requested information on a “mass illegal alien influx event” that occurred in September 2023 and led to over 11,000 encounters with unlawful crossers in one day.
They also wanted to know about claims that DHS officials cut Concertina wire at Eagle Pass — installed to keep immigrants out of the US — to assist aliens in illegally entering the country.
Jordan sent Mayorkas a letter on March 13, 2024. It explains that the Judiciary Committee gave multiple opportunities for the DHS secretary to comply and adds that it has resorted to issuing a subpoena for the outstanding information.
Calls for Impeachment
The House of Representatives moved to impeach Mayorkas over his alleged gross negligence. They accused him of “willfully and systematically” failing to enforce border laws. The House voted 214-213 on February 13, leading Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Minority Whip John Thune (R-SD) to request a full impeachment trial in the Senate.
The issue is now in the hands of the Senate, which would need a two-thirds vote to convict and remove Mayorkas from his position. Because Democrats have the majority in the upper chamber, the chances of getting a conviction are pretty slim.
Mayorkas made history as the first US cabinet member ever to be impeached.
