(RightWing.org) – Three years in, the Biden administration has completely failed to secure our southern border — in fact, it’s actively blocking states’ attempts to do it themselves. A GOP senator now says Biden could protect the border using existing laws if he wanted to. After all, former president Donald Trump did.
Talking to Newsmax’s “Wake Up America” on February 6, Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) dismissed the idea that Biden is trying to fix the border crisis. He argued that the president has the authority to close the border, “because he used it to open it up.” According to Johnson, Biden “wanted an open border.” He added that it’s hard to negotiate for improved security with an administration that doesn’t actually want it.
Discussing the bipartisan border security bill the Senate is working on, he said Republicans — who do want to stem the flood of illegal immigration — are facing massive challenges, because nothing that would fix the problem was acceptable to Democrats. He slammed the bill, saying it would actually make it harder for future presidents to secure the border, and said the negotiations were bound to fail because “you’re negotiating with arsonists to put out their fire.”
It looks like Johnson won’t have to worry about the bill for too much longer because its chances of success are fading fast. A new compromise deal unveiled on Tuesday quickly disintegrated, with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) saying it was unlikely to be passed. The GOP-controlled House has made it clear that any border bill that doesn’t address Republican concerns will be “dead on arrival” — but a bill that does meet those concerns is unlikely to make it through the Senate. Johnson might have failed in his first attempt to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, but his determined lobbying against the border bill looks to have paid off.
