(RightWing.org) – An influential California congressman has joined the growing chorus of senior Democrats calling on President Biden to drop out of the election. Representative Adam Schiff (D-CA) told reporters he has “serious concerns” about Biden’s ability to beat GOP challenger Donald Trump. The president insists he’ll fight on — but his own party is abandoning him.
Schiff Breaks Ranks With Biden
Since the catastrophic debate between Biden and Trump on June 27, the president has come under increasing pressure to step down. His gaffes, confusion and visibly fading mental capacity swept away Democrat attempts to pretend he’s fit to serve another term, and the wall of official silence around his campaign quickly started to break down.
Over 20 Democrat legislators, and many other senior party figures, have now gone public in asking him to bow out of the race. Schiff, a high-profile House Democrat, is the latest to call time on Biden’s re-election bid.
Schiff entered the House in 2001 and since then has represented four different California districts. He’s also served on a number of House committees, including an eight-year tenure as ranking member of the powerful House Intelligence Committee. He came to national attention as lead impeachment manager in President Trump’s first impeachment trial.
On July 17, Schiff released a statement to the media calling on Biden to end his reelection campaign. After praising Biden’s record in Congress and the White House, saying he has “made our country better,” he went on to say he has “serious concerns about whether the president can defeat Donald Trump in November.” Adding that it’s Biden’s decision, and confirming that he’ll support whoever the Democrat nominee is, he called on the president to “pass the torch.”
Top Dems Have Had Enough
There have been questions about Biden’s age and mental fitness since he launched his 2020 election campaign, but up to now the Democrats have closed ranks around him. As recently as June 17, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre insisted that videos showing Biden freezing up, losing track of what he was saying or showing bizarre and inexplicable behavior were “cheap fakes” created to discredit the president.
However, after the debate there’s no way to pretend Biden doesn’t have serious problems. Rumors that senior Democrats were privately pushing him to drop out quickly began to spread. When that didn’t work, top liberals started going public. So far, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), three Democrat senators, at least two dozen House members, ten of the party’s major donors and even Hollywood star George Clooney have called on Biden to quit. So far the president claims he’ll keep going — but he’s running out of supporters.
