(RightWing.org) – Former president Donald Trump is under increasing pressure from the courts, but he’s hitting back. At a recent donor event, he accused President Biden of modeling his administration on Nazi Germany’s infamous secret police. It’s obvious he sees the legal system as a weapon the Democrats are now using against him.
On May 4 Trump held a private donor retreat in Palm Beach, Florida, just days after he was fined $9,000 for violating a gag order in his New York fraud trial. While he didn’t mention that directly, he blasted what many of his supporters see as a politicized use of the courts in an attempt to derail his election campaign. In a direct comparison with Nazi Germany, he said, “These people are running a Gestapo administration,” and added that “it’s the only way they’re going to win.”
Trump’s comments seemed to go down well with his audience, triggering loud applause. One guest even said Trump had been chosen by God. Trump himself focused on the fact that political opponents of the Biden administration do seem to end up in court quite a lot, referencing Representative Henry Cuellar (D-TX) who was recently indicted for allegedly accepting $600,000 in bribes.
Cuellar is a conservative Democrat, part of his party’s Blue Dog faction, and during the Trump administration, he voted for Trump’s policies over 40% of the time. He opposes abortion and has backed bills to strip federal funding from so-called “sanctuary” cities. Now he’s facing serious federal charges that have already forced him off the powerful House Homeland Security Committee.
If Trump sticks to the line that Biden is using the justice system as a club to hit his opponents with, that’s going to resonate with a lot of voters. Almost all Republicans — and, significantly, over a third of Democrats — already believe he did nothing wrong in the New York case. This is a button Trump can keep pushing.
